Nereide at Venice 82: Samanta Piccinetti tells the story of the Italian Coast Guard through the sea and emotions

There is a boat that sails through waves and emotion. Its name is Nereide, and it is the gozzo – a traditional Italian fishing craft – at the heart of a short film by Alessandro D’Ambrosi and Santa De Santis. The movie is ready to drop anchor on the stage of the Venice International Film Festival. On September 5, 2025, as part of the Venice Production Bridge, its screening will celebrate the meeting of myth, memory, and lived experience.
This work was created as a tribute to an anniversary that is part of the history of the Bel Paese: the 160th anniversary of the Italian Coast Guard. This is a recurrence that goes beyond mere remembrance, becoming a narration, an emotion, a dialogue between the sea and humanity. Nereide, the gozzo that gives the film its title, becomes a symbol of a collective journey: fragile and resistant, simple and poetic, rooted in maritime tradition yet able to speak with universal voice.
Nereide, a short film that intertwines the sea with emotions
The story, punctuated by Giuseppe Lo Faro’s powerful original music, unfolds between true stories and the allure of the imaginary. In the wake of myth, the work recalls the archetype of the mermaid, a creature that combines attraction and mystery, dreams and metamorphosis. The directors’ dreamlike narration thus creates a gateway beyond reality, inviting the viewer to be carried away on a journey that traverses the vastness of the sea but also touches the heart of each of us.
Embodying the tension between authenticity and symbolism is an exceptional cast: Giulio Scarpati, who gives depth and delicacy to every gesture; Samanta Piccinetti, an intense and radiant performer with a powerful evocative quality; Isabel Russinova, an elegant and magnetic presence; and Ciro Minopoli, Pietro Morigi, Aurora Morigi and Sabrina Scotti, each part of a narrative chorus that resonates with humanity.
The production, a collaboration between Piuma Film, Run Film, and Cortinametraggio, demonstrates the potency of synergy between cinema and institutions, between creative freedom and civic responsibility. This is because the sea is not merely a backdrop: it is a protagonist, a living memory, and a testament to the constant commitment of those who have protected it for more than a century and a half.

The event will open with remarks by Commander Cosimo Nicastro, a leading voice from the Italian Coast Guard, to highlight the underlying sincerity of the cinematic fiction. The authors and actors will then take the stage to reveal what went on behind the scenes, offering the audience the privilege of sharing emotions: fears, hopes, and the beauty of an audiovisual project that has blended the real and the visionary.
Nereide is more than just a short film. It is a journey and a metaphor for human existence: fragile and at the same time indestructible, driven by unpredictable currents, yet capable of reaching new horizons. Venice, a city that lives and breathes water, becomes the natural harbour for this profound story, which intertwines memory, myth, and the sea in a single powerful emotional wave.

Venice 82, EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Samanta Piccinetti on Nereide: ‘Playing my character, I realized it’s a duty that comes from the heart’
Riding a wave of emotion and human heartbeats, Nereide arrives to the Venice Film Festival. Il Difforme had an exclusive interview with Samanta Piccinetti, protagonist of the short film, to have her share her thoughts on the emotions, challenges, and meanings of a work that celebrates the 160th anniversary of the Italian Coast Guard and the eternal charm of the sea.

Samanta, what about the screenplay for Nereide struck you the most when the project was presented to you?
I have to say that it immediately struck me. It is not easy for a script to touch your heart like that. The ethereal and slow atmosphere, straddling the line between dream and reality, captivated me. It was as if the rhythm of the screenplay, and then of the direction, followed the movement of the sea waves. From the very first reading, I thought that if shot that way, the film would become a truly interesting work. And it did, because directors Alessandro D’Ambrosi and Santa De Santis were perceptive and professional, exactly following the pace they had envisioned. It was love at first sight!
You have always played strong, determined, and tenacious women. What was it like stepping into the role of Commander Elena Covelli?
It felt like a full-circle moment, because I have often played strong women. At first, it isn’t easy for me to embody such serious and strict characters, because I don’t think I’m like that in real life (she laughs, editor’s note). The role was beautiful, also because it was the first time I wore a uniform. The uniform itself conveys seriousness and a certain toughness, so I was even more concerned about portraying such a strong female figure. To prepare for the performance, I started by exploring the parts of the character I could relate to, and then I worked on the traits that were farthest from me. We wanted to show the humanity hidden behind the discipline of the law enforcement officers, as well as their heroism. Thanks to the film, I had the opportunity to know the Italian Coast Guard personnel personally. I experienced this reality firsthand, and it was a great discovery. There was one sentence from Commander Zito that struck me. When you belong to a military corps, there is certainly a sense of duty, something that is present in the short film. However, it isn’t a responsibility imposed from outside, but a duty that comes from the heart. By playing my character, I understood that this is a profession chosen because one feels it deeply inside. When you must listen to your heart, you can’t help but follow it.

What were the biggest challenges during filming, and do you have a particular anecdote you would like to share?
The last day of shooting was quite demanding (she laughs, editor’s note). We filmed extensively at sea. I’m not very used to the maritime environment, since I’m from the Tuscan countryside. The sea was rough, and the motorboat was rolling heavily. Giulio Scarpati and I were filming a very touching scene. At one point, I looked at him and saw he was completely pale and about to get seasick. At that moment, I realized I was also feeling terrible, and I thought we might not make it. Luckily, we powered through and managed to finish the scene.
It was a fantastic set, with so much energy, professionalism, dedication: this is a memory I will always cherish.
What do you hope the audience will take away from your performance?
I always hope that a strong sense of empathy is created or awakened by what the audience sees or hears. I hope this feeling remains with them as they navigate daily life. I would also like to convey the message that it is beautiful to share, not to divide. I believe that recognizing the value of others and what they do, and giving that back, is the most important thing we have in life.

The film touches on important themes, emphasizing the significance of the Italian Coast Guard’s work. The audiovisual product offers a subtle perspective, without slipping into rhetoric. And without referencing the controversies that inflame public and political opinion, it still provides all the necessary food for thought…
Thank you! It’s not really about that, because for those who live and work at sea, anyone in difficulty must be saved, regardless of who they are. As I mentioned before, it’s a heartfelt duty.
The common thread of this project is the phrase ‘I’ll tell you a story’. How important is it to tell quality stories like this in today’s Cinema?
It’s fundamental to tell quality stories. They are essential because they offer a return. The film deals with universal themes that concern life itself. There are many significant and symbolic issues, such as the choice of how to live one’s existence. For example, there is a character who, despite the concern of others, is aware of his impending end and decides to face it. The numerous facets of the work resonate with current issues and are not limited to the marine environment. For this reason, I am convinced that it is very important to give profound meaning to the stories we tell.

This short film stands out for its unconventional narrative. Are you interested in continuing to work on projects that experiment with new and visionary approaches?
Yes, absolutely. I really like to experiment. In my job there is so much to experience, to create, to explore. You never stop learning, seeing new things, growing, and studying…
Good luck with the event on September 5! I imagine there must be a lot of emotion…
Thank you so much. Yes, there’s a great deal of emotion. Nereide has been an intense journey, both on and off the set, and bringing it to Venice is a privilege that is truly moving.

A sincere thanks to Samanta Piccinetti for sharing her emotion and intensity. Special thanks also go to the entire creative and production team, who made Nereide a collective work of art. And finally, a word of gratitude to the Italian Coast Guard, who has been watching over the sea for 160 years with dedication and humanity.
